Saturday Horseracing Tips

The Welsh National is ON, although the track will be VERY HEAVY! It has rained overnight and more rain throughout the day! It will not be pretty!

When conditions are this bad the form often goes out of the window and it makes it a lottery somewhat. However we have more chance than winning the National Lottery, because we can narrow it down a bit. My approach is once again to adopt the Occam’s Razor Principle, in so much as the simplest approach is usually the best answer. Look for a horse that goes in the ground and has done it before. In this context my bet is….

13.45 Chepstow EMPERORS CHOICE (Each Way) 11/1

Won this race last year in heavy ground, had a good break afterwards and came back with a good win at Haydock in Novemeber, also in heavy going. Venetia Williams’ horses tend to live by the mantra, the wetter the better! You may point out that the horse is now 10 pounds higher than last year, but many of these will fall by the wayside relatively quickly. The price is right!  This is a very good Each Way bet!

Chepstow is going to be hard work.  There are some good form chances there, but as I have already said the formbook goes out of the window when the course is as heavy as it is, barely raceable I’m told.

The conditions here are much better…

It is amazing to see the word soft appear in the going! Summer seems a long way off right now doesn’t it! Cheltenham is not far away, in terms of weeks, but it feels a long way off right now! The big race of the day is the Lanzarote Hurdle and the bet here is…

14.35 Kempton BROTHER TEDD (Each Way) 10/1

The Hobbs team are in great form at present. Richard Johnson is riding winners for fun and we have a very good value bet here. Won a handicap off a mark of 144 before running grade 2 company at Ascot in a race won by Rock On Ruby. The handicapper has put him up to a mark of 153, but you have to look at the Ascot form and think a repeat of that level would belie that mark. He could actually be well treated here off top weight. 10/1 is a great each way bet
